PE and Public Services Department
The PE Department is very successful and forward thinking. It consists of 17 members of staff, all of which share the goal of encouraging participation in physical activity from all our students. We also strive to ensure that students experience and master different roles in sport, such as coaching and leading.
We strive to develop students competence and confidence to take part in a range of physical activities that become a central part of their lives both in and out of school.
Our PE curriculum is wide and varied and enables all students to enjoy and succeed in many different physical activities.
We also deliver a variety of accredited courses at key stage 4 and 5 which not only allows our students to gain a qualification in sport but may also help to lead towards a career in sport.
The PE department also delivers BTEC Public Services courses at both key stage 4 and 5 which are ideal for any student that is interested in employment in the public service sector.
The Department is large and innovative and consists of 17 staff (including a SGO and a full-time technician) delivering across the full age range 11-19.

In KS3 and KS4 Core PE students are offered a wide range of individual and team activities making use of our extensive and high-quality facilities. During these activities they are given the opportunity to perform, evaluate, make decisions and lead others.
KS4 Options – We deliver a variety of accredited courses including the GCSE PE and Level 2 BTEC First Awards in Sport and Public Services.
Post 16 – We offer Level 3 CTECH Sport and Physical Activity at either Extended Certificate or Diploma and Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Public Services. We also hope to introduce A Level PE in the very near future.
The department offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities to both boys and girls. There are both recreational clubs and school teams such as Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Football and Netball. Therefore, students have the opportunity to participate recreationally or on a competitive basis against other schools.
Hanson School students compete at a very good level across a range of sports including athletics, badminton, football, swimming, gymnastics, dance, golf and netball. In 2018 alone, we have become Bradford school badminton champions and West Yorkshire school athletics champions. We also have more than 20 students who have gained individual national rankings within athletics. A number of students are involved in sports leadership programmes and help to organise and run a host of primary sports events.
As a department we have very high expectations of both ourselves and our students and the standards that we set have helped us, and we hope will continue to help us achieve success and gain the best possible outcomes for our students.
